Well folks, the GOP may be resting until Monday April 18, but we can't. Keep those calls and e-mails coming to the Democratic senators . Let them know how important it is for them to oppose this anti-trans bill and thank them for doing so.
We are making a difference but we can't let up. SB723 needs to die. The best part is you're helping kill a bill in a red state, something some misguided people in the TBLG community along I-5 and I-95 claim we red state 'libruls' can't do.
Yes we can. Yes we will.

Update On Texas Senate Bill 723
I received this alert message yesterday morning and posted this action alert on the blog because the Reich Wing, Lone Star State Division tried to pull a fast one and slide Senate Bill 723 through the Senate Committee on Jurisprudence.
HB 3666 in the 2009 session clarified the list of acceptable identity documents that could be presented for use to obtain a marriage license. One of those documents was a court ordered name and gender change.
This bill was penned in response to the ongoing Nikki Araguz case and the coverage its getting in the Houston area and in the blogosphere in which our trans sister is being sued for her widow's benefits by her late husband Thomas Araguz III's ex-wife Heather Delgado and his mother Simona Longoria.
The bill proposed by Sen. Tommy Williams (R-The Woodlands) seeks to remove a court ordered change of gender from the lengthy list of approved identifying documents a person in the Lone Star State can present to obtain a marriage license.
S.B. 723 amends Section 2.005(b), Family Code, by removing "or sex change" in reference to documents acceptable in proving an applicant's identity for obtaining a marriage license.
As proposed, S.B. 723 amends current law relating to the proof of an applicant's identity and age required for the issuance of a marriage license.
You can use a school ID or prison ID card to obtain a marriage license in Texas, but if Tommy Williams gets his way, no more presenting those court orders of legal gender change. We God fearing Texas loving Tea Klux Klan members can't have you transsexuals getting married in the Great State of Texas. It'll make it harder for us to keep oppressing them homosexuals (sarcasm meter on maximum)
The update is that according to Cristan, we had five people show up to testify against this bill and no one testified in favor of it. You can watch the March 22 hearing testimony starting at the 1:13:08 mark. The phone lines to all the senators on that committee were lit up by our supporters..
SB 723 is still showing ' left pending in committee' status, but we will still have to keep an eye on it because the Texas legislative session runs until May 30.
Cristan also says thanks to everyone who called (and are still calling) the senators who make up the committee, came to the hearing on short notice and got the word out about SB 723 with literally no warning.
You're welcome.
Thanks to you Cristan for making that last minute drive to Austin to testify.

NBJC Comments On Shepherd-Hughley 'The View' Ignorance Of HIV/AIDS Prevalence In Black Community

Last week, we heard once again that Black gay and bisexual men are responsible for the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the Black community, a dangerous stereotype repeated on ABC's "The View" by host Sherri Shepherd and guest host D. L. Hughley.
While discussing the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) ban that prevents gay and bisexual men from donating blood, Shepherd and Hughley communicated oft-repeated misinformation about the causes of increased HIV rates among Black women.
Here is an excerpt from the exchange on the June 22 broadcast:
Hughley: When you look at the prevalence of HIV in the African American Community, it's primarily young women who are getting it from men who are on the down low. That's the thing.
Shepherd: The down low is black men who've been going out. They are having sex with men and they're not telling their girlfriends or their wives that they're gay and they're husbands, as well. And it's very prevalent with African American women because they come home and have sex with their wives or their girlfriends. And they're not telling them that they're gay.
Shepherd: It's so big in the Black community with women because they're having unprotected sex with men who have been having sex with... with men.
Following this exchange, D.L. Hughley went on to express his support for gay marriage. While we applaud his support, we cannot ignore the need for responsible reporting of the facts, by Hughley, Shepherd, and others who have irresponsibly repeated this stereotype.
Last week, ABC refused to issue an on-air correction.
Dr. Kevin Fenton, Director of the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention told the National Newspaper Publisher's Association in October of 2009, the CDC "has looked to see what proportion of [HIV] infections is coming from male partners who are bisexual and found that there are actually relatively few." According to Dr. Fenton and the CDC's research, most HIV infections can be attributed to other factors including injecting drugs and drug use.
It is time that we have an informed dialogue around the truths about HIV/AIDS in the Black community, void of the stereotypes about Black LGBT people--engaging Shepherd, Hughley, and other celebrity voices.

We refuse to stay silent, and we hope you will join us. Take action by:
1: Clicking here to read a transcript of the offending broadcast and sign the petition.
2: Posting a link of GLAAD's Action Alert to your Twitter feed, Facebook page, and any other social media you use to spread the word to your network.
It is all of our responsibility to correct the spreading of myths that contribute to hostility towards African-American LGBT people.
In solidarity,
Sharon J. Lettman
